Unlike most of the posters here it's being used to control a heat source (there's a menu option for heat or cool), an outdoor wood boiler that holds over 300 gallons of hot water. The only connection to beer is keeping the house warm so the beer in the refrigerator doesn't freeze solid. The boiler was shipped with one of these controls, which died a couple weeks before it's one year warranty ended. The boiler maker cross shipped a replacement, and the one ordered here is a spare - hopefully never to be used, but when it's 20 below you can't wait several days for a replacement. If you are home brewing I immediately suggest you purchase a good used freezer from craigslist and a RANCO ETC 111000. You can use this device to make a keezer, a cold crash device, or a controlled fermentation environment.I use mine for cold crashing and controlled fermentation and it works perfectly. I didn't doubt the product would work well but was worried about having to wire myself.I chose to buy the version that required being wired due to it being much cheaper. I made the right choice. I was able to wire for less than $10 with supplies I bought at Wal-Mart.There are tons of how to videos for these. Very easy to use and works great! The temp probe has a decent long wire so you don't have to have the controller right beside the source. The wiring instructions are easy enough as long as you have a basic understanding of electric circuits (normal open, normal closed, etc). Other than that, very easy to operate. I have it on an aquaculture setup and it's been running flawlessly for months. I even wired it wrong at first which cause it to overload the controller, but it simply tripped the breaker and didn't damage the controller. It has a wide range of temp controls, and you can set a wide variance if you want. I like to keep the water temp as stable as possible, so I set it at 79F with a variance of 1 degree. I bought this after alot of shopping around for a temp controller for my fermentation chamber. I was worried about wiring it myself, until I watched a couple video's on wiring this together. I ended up picking this up for less than 60, my LHBS has analog controllers selling for 79.00 so it was pretty much a no brainer. I received it, wired it together without any issues, then tested it with an old chest freezer that I picked up. It has been working in the garage in Phoenix, AZ so @115 avg right now and it is keeping the fermenting beer at 62 without issues. Here in a week I will test the cooler side of it when I crash cool down to 43, for a couple days. I did this as an after thought, and have a ton of regrets on the "mounting" design pictured (so I can tell you a whole bunch of ways to improve on this).. First, dont do the complicated "F" shape (shape of the assembled pipes) with all the "T" fittings and elbows I used (because you cant thread the thermostat thru the fittings, and they are unnecessary anyway).. So I had a plug to plug into the wall and a socket to plug my heater into. But if you're not familiar with the hot, neutral, and ground wires of a power cord, you should not attempt it. Also, it took me an hour to connect the cords.
