Product Description Derek Mortland's "Medicine Wheel" is a great, soothing, and exhilarating piece of work. All the songs have a certain vibration that connect to the heart and soul. The sounds of life have never resonated so true. About the Artist Derek has his own distinctive style as an acoustic guitarist. Playing mostly on a 12-string instrument, he emphasizes unusual tunings that set his exploratory compositions on an eclectic plane that is described as transcendent. Having studied music theory and the art of improvisation in jazz bands from an early age, Derek has applied much of this theory in the tunings he uses to adapt the instrument to his disability. While competing in motorcycle roadracing at a profressional level Mr. Mortland crashed during a race incurring a head injury and paralyzing spinal injuries. "The acceptance of my situation was almost immediate, but the reality of the challenges ahead of me was not as easy to accept. The road through life with a disability would at times prove to be a bumpy ride," says Derek. Music, it turned out, became a great therapy but it was a hard-fought battle. Derek had to learn to play the guitar again. Although making a strong recovery from the head injury, his level of spinal cord injury and paralysis limits trunk balance and stability. This affects the way he must hold the instrument. The adaptations Derek has made allow him to compose pieces with an orchestral-like fullness while facilitating greater ease with the fretted notes. The 12-string strongly compliments this approach. His music brings the stories of his life experiences into a rhythm and harmony that resonates with universal emotional and spiritual life experiences.
