Product Description Na Mele Hula `O Hawai`i: Lorna Lim's beautiful voice, her deep knowledge of hula, and her connection to the Big Island's music tradition place her among Hawaii's living treasures. Born and raised in the North Kohala district on the Big Island, she began playing music at an early age with her siblings and parents, an award-winning family musical group known throughout Hawaii simply as 'The Lim Family'. Her sister Nani is one of Hawaii's most renowned Hula teachers, and her Grammy nominated brother, Sonny, is one of Hawaii's top slack key guitar players. Lorna's performances have taken her throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. Lorna recorded Polinahe; for hula dancers in a style that reflects her personal musical tradition. The translation of the title - poli, meaning from the heart, and nahe, meaning sweet and pure - sums up Lorna's musical style and the beautiful quality of her voice. Produced by grammy award winning producer, Charles Michael Brotman. Review Lorna Lim makes another significant contribution to the extensive discography of the Lim Family with this exquisitely crafted album. Lim, her parents, sisters and brother Elmer (Sonny) Lim Jr. won back-to-back Hoku Awards (Traditional Hawaiian Album) in 1981 and 1982, and the group returned to the winners' circle following her father's death to win a third Hoku (Group of the Year) in 2002. Polinahe is now an obvious front-runner in several categories for the 2010 Hoku Awards, and it would represent Hawaii beautifully at next year's Grammy Awards as well. Lim's voice is as sweet as it when the Lim Family's recording of Pua Olena; first hit almost 30 years ago. Now as then, her singing takes the listener to a place that is soothing and pure. Grammy Award-winning producer Charles Michael Brotman surrounds her with talent while keeping the arrangements traditionalist in context. All but one song is Hawaiian; Lovely Hula Girl, by Jack Pitman and Randy Oness, adds a hapa-haole classic to the package. Lim recorded these songs with hula dancers in mind. Her zesty rendition of Ka Ha Ua La will get ti leaf skirts flying from Kauai to Ka'u. Kapilimehana; Alekoki and He Nani o Moloka'i; also stand out as hula numbers. With Aloha No; Lim transcends the language barrier with the sweetness of her voice. The title song is memorable for the same reason. Hula cannot exist without lyrics. They're posted on palmrecords. --John Berger, Honolulu Star BulletinLorna Lim is doubly-blessed she possesses one of the most beautiful voices in Hawaiian music, and was raised in one of Hawai i best known and gifted music and hula families. Her latest release, Polinahe, reflects her strong roots in both the Hawaiian music and hula traditions. Polinahe contains Lorna s signature vocal stylings on many Hawaiian standards, such as Hula O Makee, Alekoki, I Aloha Ia N O Kanaio, and an exquisite rendition of Lena Machado s Aloha N . It also includes some new compositions. While the CD jacket lacks lyrics and translations, the lyrics can be found on the Palm Records website, along with audio samples of each track. The background instrumentation is sparse and tasteful just enough to support and not detract from Lorna s vocals. We can only hope that this new release is the first of many to come from this gifted songstress. --Keola Donoghy nahenahenetLorna Lim Sings Sweetly and from the Heart on Latest CD: Photo: Palm Records Lorna Lim offers another set of Hoku worthy performances with her latest album Polinahe. With this collection of mostly Hawaiian language pieces, Lim presents a truly enjoyable album with deep roots in the Big Island s hula and music tradition. A native of the North Kohala district on the Big Island, Lorna Lim was born into one of Hawaii s legendary musical families. The Lim Family a Hawaiian group consisting of Lorna Li,, Elmer Sonny Lim, Mary Ann Lim and Nani Lim Yap splashed onto the Hawaiian music scene in the 1980s after being discovered by veteran record producer Bill Murata at a Kona talent contest. The family quickly produced five albums and in the process won back-to-back Hoku Awards for Best Traditional Hawaiian Album for 1981 & 1982. With Polinahe, Lorna presents an album worthy of her family s past achievements. The twelve tracks include many classic Hawaiian songs, several original compositions, and the hapa-haole classic Lovely Hula Girl. Written for hula dancers, the album offers both up-tempo arrangements and gentle reflections that are suitable to a wide range of choreography. Lorna Lim s beautiful vocals make Polinahe a must have for any Hawaiian music collection. As the album s title suggest, Lim s singing is from the heart and purely sweet. She performs with a voice that is deeply profound in its simplicity & tenderness. Her rendition of Aloha No can best be described as angel song. Lorna Lim s Polinahe is an essential album for any Hawaiian music collection. For more information, sample tracks, and lyrics, visit palmrecords --Daniel Padilla, Honolulu Music Examiner
